Windows Phone 7: The Return Of The Juggernaut

Once at the top of the smart-phone pack, Microsoft’s Windows Mobile operating system was quickly out-designed, outpaced, and out-thought by both Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android. After an eternity playing catch up, Microsoft seems to have finally reached the standards set by two of its most innovative competitors.

It’s been just over six months since Windows Phone 7 was announced at Mobile World Congress 2010 – as the follow-up to the much-maligned Windows Mobile 6 operating system, and Microsoft has just announced it has hit RTM (Release To Manufacturing) status, meaning it’s a matter of weeks rather than months until handsets start appearing for review.

With Windows Phone 7, Microsoft has really started over from scratch: gone are the Start menu and fiddly stylus.
